How did your career at delfort begin, and how has it evolved over the years?
My journey started in June 2002 when I joined the Trierenberg Group’s first trainee program. My first assignment took me to Reinbek, where I briefly moved back in with my parents after ten years away. From there, I spent time at OP Papírna before returning to Reinbek.
My focus was on pharmaceutical leaflets, and my task was clear: build the market. Looking back, it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come. What started as an opportunity has grown into a business where we are now the clear market and technology leader. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of taking on more responsibility, eventually becoming Managing Director of delfort Germany.
How has delfort influenced your professional development?
To be honest, some people are surprised that I’ve focused on the same market segment since 2002 and still find it exciting. But that’s exactly what delfort makes possible.
From the very beginning, I was encouraged to develop ideas, challenge existing approaches, and bring new concepts to the table. The culture here is open, direct, and collaborative. If you have a good idea, people listen. If something can be improved, people discuss it honestly.
That environment has helped me grow professionally. You learn to trust your colleagues, appreciate different perspectives, and work together to find the best solution.
What has been your most memorable experience at delfort?
Without question, it was the COVID-19 pandemic.
Like many businesses, we suddenly found ourselves facing an entirely new reality. Travel stopped, customer visits disappeared overnight, and we had to rethink how we worked. At the same time, OP Papírna was launching a new paper machine - a huge milestone under the most challenging circumstances imaginable.
What stands out most is how people came together. We shifted our focus from external activities to supporting each other internally and adapting quickly to the situation.
The timing of the new machine also proved incredibly important. Demand for pharmaceutical leaflets for vaccine increased significantly, and we were able to respond effectively. It was a challenging period, but it also showed what a strong team can achieve when everyone pulls in the same direction.
At delfort, success is never about one person. There are no lone wolves - only teams working together, combining their strengths, and achieving great things. That's what makes me proudest.
What makes thinprint publishing such an exciting field, especially in an increasingly digital world?
I don’t think of thinprint papers as a product. I think of them as a technology.
Our expertise allows us to produce papers with lower basis weights that require less ink and fewer resources while still delivering excellent print results. We originally developed this technology for religious literature and later adapted it successfully for pharmaceutical leaflets.
The combination of resource efficiency and high performance is what makes it so exciting. Sustainability starts with using fewer resources wherever possible and using them intelligently.
As for e-readers or digital pharmaceutical leaflets, I see them as valuable complements to printed products rather than complete replacements. Digital and print can work together, and both have important roles to play.
What might surprise your colleagues and customers about you?
Many people are surprised to learn that after more than 40 years of playing handball, I swapped the handball court for the tennis court. Since then, I've discovered the true meaning of the "form of the day". So, one day you feel like a professional, and the next you wonder if you've ever held a racket before. The only thing handball and tennis really have in common is that both involve a ball!
There's also something many colleagues outside our lightweight printing business may not know about me: I seem to have exceptionally bad luck when I travel.
Over the years, I’ve experienced an emergency landing due to smoke on a plane, driven through what looked like a fireball on the highway, and spent an entire trade show week in Paris without my suitcase. At one point, my boss no longer wanted to travel with me.
Do you have a favorite delfort product?
Absolutely: terreus®.
It’s a beautifully textured design paper with a distinctive watermark and a premium feel. We use it for customer correspondence and datasheets, and I’ve had customers call me simply to ask about the paper itself instead of the samples we originally sent.
One of my favorite facts about terreus is that Finland’s accession documents to NATO were signed on it. That says a lot about the quality and character of the product.
Why is delfort still such an attractive employer after all these years?
The answer is simple: people and opportunities.
delfort continues to grow, evolve, and invest in the future, which creates exciting prospects for everyone who works here. At the same time, it has managed to maintain a culture that feels personal.
You can talk to anyone, regardless of role, location, or title. People are approachable, direct, and willing to help. Even though delfort has grown into a global organization, it still retains the flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit that make it special.
